ABOUT
Mary Hopkin (b. 1950) is a Welsh folk/pop singer with delicate, expressive soprano vocals who became famous during the late 1960s and early 1970s and was one of the first artists to be signed to The Beatles' Apple label. She is best known for the poignant and nostalgic "Those Were The Days" (1968), an English language remake of a 1920s Russian song that topped the U.K., Canadian, and U.S. Adult Contemporary charts, made the U.S. Pop/Rock Top 5, and became a million-seller.
Born Mary Elizabeth Blodwen Hopkin in Pontardawe, Wales, she began singing as a child and and launched her musical career as a folk singer with a local group. While still in her late teens, she was discovered by the model Twiggy, who saw her on TV giving a winning performance on the popular British TV talent show, "Opportunity Knocks," and recommended her to Paul McCartney. Her fame took off internationally in 1968 with "Those Were The Days," which was followed by several more hits that include her Top 20 rendition of the Lennon/McCartney-penned "Goodbye" (1969) and the island-flavored "Temma Harbour" (1970). In 1970, she represented the U.K. in the Eurovision Song Contest and came in second with "Knock, Knock Who's There?" which became a Top 5 U.K. hit and a million seller. Beginning in 1971, she stepped back from the limelight to focus on family but continued to record over the years, maintaining a loyal fan base throughout her career.
