The Ikettes - Songs

ABOUT

The Ikettes were an R&B trio of female backing singers for the Ike & Tina Turner Revue that became famous as recording artists during the early and mid 1960s. Best known for the Ike Turner-penned "I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song)" (1962), an R&B Top 5 smash featuring Tina Turner as backing vocalist which became their biggest Pop/Rock crossover success, other hits include "Peaches "N" Cream" (1965) and "I'm So Thankful" (1965).

Formed in 1960, the first official lineup consisted of Josie Jo Armstead, Eloise Hester, and lead singer Delores Johnson who recorded "I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song)." The Ikettes became known for their sexy stage presence mirroring that of Tina Turner, complete with minidresses, flowing long hair, and high-energy dance routines. The most popular lineup consisted of Venetta Fields, Robbie Montgomery, and Jessie Smith who recorded the group's later hits before leaving in late 1965 to form The Mirettes (who later had a hit with their cover of Wilson Pickett's "In The Midnight Hour"). Ike Turner hired new members after the departure of Fields, Montgomery, and Smith, and The Ikettes continued through the 2000s, later backing Tina Turner, with numerous personnel changes over the years.
