Jessie Hill - Songs

ABOUT

Jessie Hill (December 9, 1932 - September 17, 1996) was an R&B/blues singer, songwriter, and drummer who became famous during the early 1960s. He is best known for his wild and crazy instrumental smash, "Ooh Poo Pah Doo - Part II" (1960), an R&B Top 5 hit that made the Pop/Rock Top 40.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he began as a teenager playing drums in local bands and in 1951, formed his own group, the House Rockers. He also performed with such iconic New Orleans-area musicians as Professor Longhair and Huey "Piano" Smith throughout much of the 1950s before forming a new version of the House Rockers in 1958, which enabled him to focus more on singing.

Hill's fame took off in 1960 with the release of "Ooh Poo Pah Doo," which became a Mardi Gras favorite and a beloved R&B classic covered over the years by dozens of artists, including The Shirelles and Ike & Tina Turner. He released 13 more singles and one album through 1971 and had a minor hit with "Whip It On Me" (1960).
