ABOUT
The Hillside Singers were a multi-member male-female folk pop vocal group that became famous during the early 1970s. They are best known for the cheery Top 20 smash, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)" (1972), which became a million-seller.
The Hillside Singers were formed in 1971 by advertising agency McCann Erickson to perform a new jingle for a Coca-Cola commercial. McCann Erickson originally had The New Seekers in mind, but they were unable to fit the project into their schedule. McCann Erickson then enlisted the help of producer Al Ham who put together a group of singers that included wife Mary Mayo and their daughter Lorri.
The commercial proved to be so popular that the jingle was rewritten and expanded into a new song, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)," which makes no mention of Coca-Cola. This song, which became a big hit in the U.S., Canada, and Australia, also spawned an album of the same name and a Christmas record. The New Seekers soon after recorded their own version, which became an even bigger hit than that of the The Hillside Singers both in the U.S. and worldwide.
The Hillside Singers followed their initial success with the more uptempo "We're Together" (1972), a minor hit adapted from a McDonald's jingle. They also performed a sung choral version of "Move Closer To Your World," a TV news theme created by Al Ham in longtime use by WPVI-TV in Philadelphia.
