Joe Hinton - Songs

ABOUT

Joe Hinton (November 15, 1929 - August 13, 1968) was a gospel-turned-soul singer who became famous during the mid 1960s. He is best known for the impassioned "Funny" (1964), an R&B ballad remake of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" which showcases Hinton's stirring falsetto.

Born Joseph Hinton in Evansville, Indiana (some sources claim Clarksdale, Mississippi as his birthplace), he began in the 1950s as a gospel singer, performing with the Blair Gospel Singers, the Chosen Gospel Quartet, and the Spirit of Memphis Quartet. In 1958, he transitioned to secular music, signing with Peacock Records, and recorded the bluesy "Pretty Little Mama," which became a minor hit on the Music Vendor (later Record World) chart in 1959.

Hinton then debuted on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts in 1963 with the poignant "You Know It Ain't Right," and his fame took off the following year with "Funny" (1964), an R&B #1 which made the Pop/Rock Top 20 and became his biggest crossover success and a million-seller. He continued to record until his untimely death from skin cancer in 1968 at age 38, while still in the prime of his career.
