The Jive Five - Songs

ABOUT

The Jive Five were a highly acclaimed and veteran R&B/soul vocal group from Brooklyn, New York that became famous during the early 1960s. They are best known for the classic doo-wop ballad, "My True Story" (1961), a tale of romantic heartbreak in which lead singer Eugene Pitt's falsetto "cry cry cry" can be heard throughout, which topped the R&B charts and made the Pop/Rock Top 5. The Jive Five famously resurfaced many years later with their iconic a cappella "Nick-Nick-Nickelode-oooooon!" jingles for Nickelodeon which were widely aired beginning in the late 1980s.

Formed in 1959 and led by Eugene Pitt (November 6, 1937 - June 29, 2018), the original lineup also consisted of Jerome Hanna (d. 1962), Richard Harris, Norman Johnson (d. 1970), and Thurmon "Billy" Prophet, with many personnel changes over the years. In addition to "My True Story," other hits include "Never, Never" (1961), "What Time Is It?" (1962), "These Golden Rings" (1962), "I'm A Happy Man" (1965), "Sugar (Don't Take Away My Candy)" (1968), and "I Want You To Be My Baby" (1970, as The Jyve Fyve). The Jive Five were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2007. They remained a staple on the oldies circuit for decades, with Eugene Pitt serving as lead singer up to his passing in 2018. He remained the central figure for The Jive Five and was often the only original member in an ever-changing lineup.
