Percy Faith (April 7, 1908 - February 9, 1976) was a highly acclaimed and veteran Canadian-American bandleader, orchestrator, composer, and conductor known for his lush, string-laden orchestral arrangements who became famous during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Best known for the Grammy-winning and chart-topping "The Theme From 'A Summer Place'" (1960), from the 1959 movie starring Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee, other hits include "Theme For Young Lovers" (1960).
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Faith began playing violin and piano as a child and performed in theaters and at the city's Massey Hall. He later turned to conducting after his hands were badly burned in a fire and began on radio in the early 1930s in Canada before relocating to Chicago, Illinois in 1940. A prolific recording artist, Percy Faith placed 21 albums on the Billboard Hot 200 through 1972, making him one of the all-time top acts of easy listening. His biggest seller by far was "Themes for Young Lovers" (1963), featuring easy listening remakes of various pop and rock hits from the late 1950s and early 1960s, was his biggest seller by far, peaking at #32 on this chart and followed by three more similarly-themed albums. Other top albums include "Love Theme from 'Romeo And Juliet'" (1969), which earned Percy Faith a second Grammy.
Percy Faith also composed the theme to the NBC TV Western series, "The Virginian," and wrote the soundtracks to several movies, including "Tammy Tell Me True" (1961), "I'd Rather Be Rich" (1964), "The Third Day" (1965), and "The Oscar" (1966). He received an Academy Award nomination for his adaptation of the song score for the romantic musical drama, "Love Me Or Leave Me" (1955).
