ABOUT
Rolf Harris (March 30, 1930 - May 10, 2023) was an Australian pop/novelty singer, musician, TV personality, painter, and actor who became famous as a recording artist during the early 1960s. He is best known internationally for the jaunty and comedic "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" (1963), which topped the Adult Contemporary charts and made the Pop/Rock Top 5. This song's distinctive sound was due in large part to an instrument he invented known as the wobble board made from a large piece of hardboard that, when flicked, makes a distinctive "whoop-whoop" noise.
Born in Bassendean, Western Australia, Harris showed early talent in art and swimming, becoming a national junior backstroke champion. He moved to the U.K. in 1952 where he became a popular entertainer, musician, and TV personality. His long career included such shows as "The Rolf Harris Show," "Animal Hospital," and "Rolf On Art." He was also a respected painter whose works were exhibited at such prestigious venues as London's National Gallery.
