Richard Harris (October 1, 1930 - October 25, 2002) was a highly acclaimed and veteran Irish actor and singer who became famous beginning in the late 1950s. As a recording artist, he is best known for the poignant "MacArthur Park" (1968), a lengthy orchestral pop song in multiple movements written by Jimmy Webb that topped the charts in Australia and Canada and became a Top 5 hit in the U.S., the U.K., and South Africa. Harris' other hits also include "My Boy" (1971) and two other Jimmy Webb-penned songs, "The Yard Went On Forever" (1968) and "Didn't We" (1969).

Born Richard St John Francis Harris in Limerick, Ireland to a large farming family, he attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before working several years on stage. His breakthrough movie role came in 1963 with "The Sporting Life," which earned him an Oscar nomination. His numerous other movie roles also include the lead in "A Man Called Horse" (1970), gunfighter "English Bob" in "Unforgiven" (1992), and "Albus Dumbledore" in "Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone" (2001) and "Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets" (2002), the latter his final film. His best known role that showcases his singing talents is as "King Arthur" in both the long-running stage production and 1967 movie adaptation of "Camelot." Richard Harris' numerous honors and accolades include the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, a Grammy, and a Golden Globe.
