ABOUT
Al Green (b.1946) is a highly acclaimed and veteran R&B/soul singer, songwriter, pastor, and producer with a flair for smooth, soulful ballads who became famous during the early and mid 1970s. Best known for the imploring "Let's Stay Together" (1971), which topped both the Pop/Rock and R&B charts and became his greatest crossover success, his many other top hits include "Tired Of Being Alone" (1971), "Look What You Done For Me" (1972), "I'm Still In Love With You" (1972), "You Ought To Be With Me" (1972), "Livin' For You" (1973), "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)" (1974), "L-O-V-E (Love)" (1975), and "Full Of Fire" (1975).
Born Albert Leornes Greene in Forrest City, Arkansas, he began performing at age 10 with his sister and in high school, formed Al Greene & The Creations. By 1966, the group had changed its name to Al Greene & The Soul Mates, and in late 1967, they debuted on both the Pop/Rock and R&B charts with "Back Up Train." He was discovered soon after by Memphis producer Willie Mitchell and Green was signed to Mitchell's label, Hi Records, where he had a long string of hits on both the Pop/Rock and R&B charts through the late 1970s. In 1979, Green became an ordained minister and recorded mainly gospel music throughout most of the 1980s, returning to secular music by the end of the decade. He has continued to perform and record actively to the present day.
Al Green's numerous honors and accolades include 11 Grammys, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a BMI Icon award (2004), being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and being named a Kennedy Center Honors recipient in 2014. Two of his songs, "Let's Stay Together" and "Take Me To The River," were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
