ABOUT
Barbara George (August 16, 1942 - August 10, 2006) was an R&B singer and songwriter with clear, powerful soprano vocals who became famous during the early 1960s. She is best known for the self-penned "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)" (1961), a punchy, up-tempo dance smash with a melody inspired by the hymn, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." This oldies classic, which topped the R&B charts, made the Pop/Rock Top 5, and went gold, was later recorded by Fats Domino, Ike & Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, and many other artists.
Born Barbara Ann Smith in New Orleans, Louisiana, she began writing songs and singing in her church choir in her teens. She was discovered by singer Jessie Hill, which led to a recording contract with the A.F.O. (All For One) label. In addition to "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)," which became her signature song, other hits include the self-penned "You Talk About Love" (1962) and "Send For Me (If You Need Some Lovin')" (1962).
