ABOUT
David Essex (b. 1947) is a highly acclaimed and veteran English singer, songwriter, actor, and former teen idol who became famous during the early 1970s. He is best known internationally for the self-penned glam rock classic, "Rock On" (1973), a slow-tempo, atmospheric, avant-pop homage to early rock & roll and 1950s youth subculture that makes reference to such oldies classics as "Blue Suede Shoes" by Carl Perkins, and "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran as well as such cultural icons as James Dean.
Born David Albert Cook in East London, he launched his music career in the mid 1960s after initially pursuing acting, performing in various local clubs and venues. He became a prominent figure in the glam rock movement with the release of "Rock On," which topped the Canadian charts and became a Top 5 hit in both the U.K. and the U.S. Over his decades-long career in show business, David Essex appeared in many British movies, TV shows, plays, and musicals. He starred in the nostalgic coming of age drama, "That'll Be The Day" (1973), and portrayed Christ in the London production of "Godspell" (1971).
