ABOUT
David Houston (December 9, 1935 - November 30, 1993) was a highly acclaimed country singer with smooth, emotive tenor vocals who became famous during the mid 1960s and the early 1970s. He is best known for the waltzy classic country ballad, "Almost Persuaded" (1966), which topped the Country charts, made the Pop/Rock Top 40, and became his greatest crossover success. Houston's smash rendition of this Glenn Sutton/Billy Sherrill-penned country standard, sung from the point of view of a married man who struggles to resist the temptation to stray, spent a whopping nine weeks at #1 on the Country charts and won him two Grammys.
Born Charles David Houston in Bossier City, Louisiana, he rose to fame in 1963 with "Mountain Of Love" (not to be confused with the same-named song by Harold Dorman) which peaked at #2 on the Country charts and became the first in a very long string of hits that continued through 1989. In addition to "Almost Persuaded," Houston topped the Country charts with six other songs, many of which also crossed over to the Pop/Rock charts: "With One Exception" (1967), "My Elusive Dreams" (1967, with Tammy Wynette), "You Mean The World To Me" (1967), "Have A Little Faith" (1968), "Already It's Heaven" (1968), and "Baby, Baby (I Know You're A Lady)" (1969). Houston later sang duets with Barbara Mandrell on several of her early hits, including "After Closing Time" (1970) and "I Love You, I Love You" (1973).
