Don Gardner And Dee Dee Ford - Songs

ABOUT

Don Gardner (May 9, 1931 - September 4, 2018) was a veteran R&B singer, songwriter, and drummer with powerful, gritty vocals who became famous as a recording artist during the early 1960s. With singer Dee Dee Ford, he recorded the fiery, gospel-influenced, call-and-response song, "I Need Your Loving" (1962), a Top 5 R&B hit which also made the Pop/Rock Top 20. Co-written by Gardner and Bobby Robinson, this smash duet is featured in the soundtrack to the 1993 coming-of-age crime drama movie, "A Bronx Tale." Other hits by Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford include the bluesy "Don't You Worry" (1962) and their R&B remake of the 1936 Billy Hill-penned pop standard, "Glory Of Love" (1962).

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gardner began his professional career in 1947 while still at school and made his first recordings on the Gotham label in 1949. By 1953, he had formed his own group, the Sonotones, that toured throughout the eastern, southern, and upper Midwest areas of the U.S. After Gardner and Ford went their separate ways in 1965, Gardner continued to perform and record throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In 1973, he recorded a duet with famed soul singer Baby Washington, "Forever," which became a Top 40 R&B hit and his final charting song. He continued on as a jazz musician and became a part of the management of the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts in Philadelphia, serving as executive director.
