ABOUT
Eddie Floyd (b. 1937) is a highly acclaimed and veteran R&B/soul singer and songwriter with a great deal of crossover appeal who became famous during the late 1960s and 1970s. Best known for the feel-good dance smash, "Knock On Wood" (1966), which topped the R&B charts and made the Pop/Rock Top 40, other top hits include "I've Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)" (1968) and "Bring It On Home To Me" (1968).
Born in Montgomery, Alabama and raised in Detroit, Michigan, he began as a member of The Falcons (1957-1963), an influential R&B vocal group widely considered to be forerunners to such top Motown acts as The Temptations and The Four Tops. In 1965, Floyd signed with Stax Records as a songwriter and, over the years, wrote/co-wrote hits for such artists as Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Johnnie Taylor, Carla Thomas, and Rufus Thomas. Floyd's career as a solo performer was launched the following year when he recorded "Knock On Wood," a song he co-wrote with Steve Cropper that was originally intended for Otis Redding. This oldies classic has since been covered by over a hundred different artists including Redding (with Carla Thomas).
Eddie Floyd has continued to record and perform to the present day, serving on occasion as a guest performer with The Blues Brothers Band and Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. His numerous honors and accolades include being inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame as a Pioneer Award Recipient (2012), the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame (2016), and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame (2018).
