The Flirtations - Songs

ABOUT

The Flirtations are a veteran all-female R&B/soul group with a powerful, emotive sound that became famous during the late 1960s. They are best known for the dramatic and gut-wrenching "Nothing But A Heartache" (1969), which became a Top 40 hit in both the Netherlands and the U.S.

Formed in 1962 in New York City and first known as The Gypsies, the classic late 1960s hitmaking lineup consisted of sisters Ernestine and Shirley Pearce from Orangeburg, South Carolina and Viola Billups (aka Pearly Gates) from Tuskegee, Alabama. As The Gypsies, they had their first charting song in 1965 with the J.J. Jackson-penned "Jerk It," which made the R&B Top 40. The following year, they renamed themselves The Flirtations and released several non-charting singles that included the popular Northern Soul dancer tune, "Change My Darkness Into Light." In 1968, they relocated to England where they supported Tom Jones on his European tour and signed with Deram Records. Over the years, The Flirtations have amassed a loyal following among fans of Northern soul, and they have continued to record and perform actively to the present day.
