ABOUT
Fred Hughes (not to be confused with Freddie Hughes of "Send My Baby Back" fame) is an R&B/soul singer with smooth, expressive vocals who became famous during the mid 1960s. He is best known for the yearning "Ooo Wee Baby, I Love You" (1965), an R&B Top 5 smash which made the Pop/Rock Top 40 and became his biggest crossover success.
Born in Arkansas, Hughes later moved to Compton, California where he began his music career in 1962 while still in high school performing and recording with the group, The Cymbals. Hughes was signed soon after with Vee-Jay Records and, in addition to "Ooo Wee Baby, I Love You," also had hits with "You Can't Take It Away" (1965), "Baby Boy" (1969), and "I Understand" (1970). "Ooo Wee Baby, I Love You" became a soul classic in the U.K. and was re-released in 1976 by DJM Records due to popular demand. "Baby Boy," a favorite on the U.K.'s Northern soul scene, was featured in the British historical movie, "Northern Soul" (2014).
