ABOUT
Jimmy Hughes (b. 1938) is a former R&B singer with powerful vocals who became famous during the mid and late 1960s. He is best known for the self-penned "Steal Away" (1964), a poignant ballad about the emotional turmoil associated with infidelity that became a Top 20 hit on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts and his biggest crossover success. Based musically in part on the spiritual, "Steal Away To Jesus," this Southern soul classic was the first single recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and is widely regarded as having helped define the signature Muscle Shoals sound.
Born in Leighton, Alabama, he began singing in church as a child and while still in high school, was performing in a gospel group, The Singing Clouds. In 1962, he auditioned for record producer Rick Hall in Muscle Shoals, which led to the recording of his first single, "I'm Qualified." Jimmy Hughes' fame took off in 1964 with "Steal Away," which was followed by several hits on both the Pop/Rock and R&B charts that also include "Try Me" (1964), "Neighbor, Neighbor" (1966), and "Why Not Tonight" (1967). At the height of his commercial fame, Hughes also toured with such top acts as Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Bobby Womack before leaving the music industry in 1970. He later worked for the U.S. government making parts for nuclear power plants in the Tennessee River Valley, singing occasionally in his church choir.
