ABOUT
The Jaynetts were a female R&B group with an ever-changing lineup that became famous during the early 1960s. They are best known for the enigmatic and unsettling "Sally, Go 'Round The Roses" (1963), which became a Top 5 hit on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts. Drawing inspiration from the nursery rhyme, "Ring Around The Rosie," the oblique, singsongy lyrics hint at a far darker reality than a simple teenage heartbreak. The song's ominous vibes are heightened by a spooky, other-worldly musical ambiance achieved through heavy, generational reverb and the layering of numerous female vocals recorded on an old mono tape machine.
Formed in the Bronx, New York by producer Zelma "Zell" Sanders, founder of J&S Records, the singers credited on "Sally, Go 'Round The Roses" included Yvonne Bushnell, Ethel Davis (aka Vernell Hill), Ada Ray Kelly, Johnnie Louise Richardson, and Mary Sue Wells (aka Mary Sue Wellington/Mary Green Wilson), although there have been some speculations that as many as 20 singers may have contributed to the final track. The Jaynetts also had minor hits with "Keep An Eye On Her" (1963) and "Snowman, Snowman, Sweet Potato Nose" (1963) before disbanding in the mid 1960s.
