ABOUT
Jose Feliciano (b. 1945) is a highly acclaimed and veteran Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, composer, and virtuoso acoustic guitarist with a unique fusion of Latin, pop, blues, jazz, soul, and soft rock who became internationally famous during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His best known songs include his subdued, Latin-styled smash remake of The Doors' "Light My Fire" (1968) and his upbeat, self-penned Christmas carol, "Feliz Navidad," a perennial favorite since its original recording in 1970. Other hits include his cover of Tommy Tucker's "Hi-Heel Sneakers" (1968) and his soulful rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (1968) recorded live at the World Series that year. His many composition credits include the soundtrack to TV's "Chico And The Man" (1974-1978) in which he also wrote and performed the hit theme song and appeared in one episode.
Born Jose Montserrate Feliciano Garcia in Lares, Puerto Rico, he moved with his family to Spanish Harlem, New York City at age five. Blind since birth, he made his first public appearance at age nine and launched his professional career at 17 performing at coffee houses in Greenwich Village. Over his long career, Feliciano recorded over 50 albums worldwide in both English and Spanish. A multi-Grammy award winner, his numerous honors and accolades also include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1987), the Legend Award at the Billboard Latin Music Awards (2022), and being inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame (2013) and the International Latin Music Hall of Fame (2000).
