ABOUT
Marvin Hamlisch (June 2, 1944 - August 6, 2012) was a highly acclaimed pianist, conductor, and composer of movie scores who became famous beginning in the early 1970s. His numerous works include the Academy Award-winning soundtracks to "The Sting" (1973) and "The Way We Were" (1973). In 1975, he had a smash hit on Broadway with the long-running "Chorus Line." As a recording artist, Hamlisch is best known for the instrumental smash, "The Entertainer" (1974), a remake of a Scott Joplin ragtime composition which topped the Adult Contemporary chart, made the Pop/Rock Top 5, and was featured in "The Sting."
Born in Manhattan, New York into a musical family, he began at age five playing piano music he heard on the radio by ear and at six, was accepted into what is now the Juilliard School Pre-College Division. Over the years, Hamlisch won numerous awards, including three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, and a Tony, a feat known as the "EGOT." He and composer Richard Rodgers are the only ones so far to have won those prizes along with Pulitzers.
