Tom T. Hall - Songs

ABOUT

Tom T. Hall (May 25, 1936 - August 20, 2021) was a highly acclaimed country music singer-songwriter and short-story author who became famous beginning in the late 1960s. Best known for the tranquil romantic ballad, "I Love" (1973), which topped the Country charts, made the Pop/Rock Top 20, and became his biggest crossover success, he also topped the Country charts with "A Week In A Country Jail" (1969), "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died" (1971), "(Old Dogs-Children And) Watermelon Wine" (1972), "Country Is" (1974), "I Care" (1974), and "Faster Horses (The Cowboy And The Poet)" (1976. A prolific songwriter (aka "The Storyteller"), his hits for other artists include "Harper Valley PTA," which topped both the Pop/Rock and Country charts for Jeannie C. Riley in 1968, became a million-seller, and won both a Grammy and a CMA Award.

Born Thomas Hall in Tick Ridge, Kentucky, he formed a band in his teens that performed before movies for a traveling theater. While in the U.S. Army, he performed over the Armed Forces Radio Network and wrote funny songs about his experiences in the army. Following his discharge in 1961, he enrolled at Roanoke College where he worked as a deejay. He also worked at a number of radio stations before his big songwriting break in 1963 when country singer Jimmy C. Newman recorded one of his songs, "DJ For A Day." Hall relocated to Nashville the following year to work as a songwriter and wrote for such top acts as Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash, Alan Jackson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, and Loretta Lynn. After the success of "Harper Valley PTA," Hall's recording career took off and he went on to amass a long string of hits on the Country charts from 1967-1986.

A long-time member of the Grand Ole Opry, Tom T. Hall's numerous honors and accolades include being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2018 alongside his wife, bluegrass songwriter Dixie Hall (nee Deen). He is included in Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Songwriters.
