Waylon Jennings - Songs

ABOUT

Waylon Jennings (June 15, 1937 - February 13, 2002) was a highly acclaimed country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actor with a trademark deep, rough-edged baritone who became famous beginning in the mid 1960s. Best known for "Good Hearted Woman" (1976, with Willie Nelson) and "Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love)" (1977), which are among his biggest Pop/Rock crossover successes, his long string of hits on the Country charts through 1991 also includes such chart-topping classics as "I'm A Ramblin' Man" (1974), "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" (1975), "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" (1978), "I've Always Been Crazy" (1978), "Amanda" (1979), and "Theme From The Dukes Of Hazzard (Good Ol' Boys)" (1980), the opening theme to the CBS TV series in which Jennings served as the narrator.

Born Wayland Arnold Jennings in Littlefield, Texas, he began in his teens working as a deejay and performing on radio and in local bands. He gained significant recognition when he became the bassist for Buddy Holly's band in the late 1950s, narrowly escaping the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Holly, J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, and Ritchie Valens. After struggling to regain his footing in the music industry, Jennings found success in Nashville during the 1960s, and in the 1970s, he became a key figure in the outlaw country movement alongside Willie Nelson. With Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and wife Jessi Colter, he recorded country music's first platinum album, "Wanted! The Outlaws" (1976).

Over his long career, Waylon Jennings recorded over 60 albums, many of which became gold- and platinum-certified. His numerous awards and accolades include two Grammys and being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. He was also honored posthumously in 2007 by the Academy of Country Music with the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award.
