ABOUT
The Hollies are a highly acclaimed and veteran English pop/rock band with signature close-knit harmonies that became famous beginning in the mid 1960s as one of the top acts of the British Invasion. They debuted on the U.S. charts in 1964 with their hit cover of Doris Troy's "Just One Look," and their fame took off the following year with "Look Through Any Window" (1965). Their long string of hits through 1975 also includes such era-defining classics as "Bus Stop" (1966), "Stop Stop Stop" (1966), "Carrie-Anne" (1967), "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" (1969), "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" (1972), and "The Air That I Breathe" (1974).
Formed in 1962 in Manchester by Allan Clarke (vocals, harmonica, guitar) and Graham Nash (rhythm guitar, vocals), other early members included lead guitarist Tony Hicks, bassists Eric Haydock and Bernie Calvert, and drummers Don Rathbone and Bobby Elliott. Nash left in 1968 to form Crosby, Stills & Nash and was replaced by rhythm guitarist Terry Sylvester. From late 1971-mid 1973, Swedish singer Mikael Rickfors (guitar, harmonica) stood in for Clarke, who later retired in 2000. Nash reunited with The Hollies from 1982-1983 to perform and record, culminating in the band's final hit on the U.S. charts with their remake of The Supremes' "Stop In The Name Of Love" (1983).
The Hollies' numerous honors and accolades include being inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. They have continued to perform and record actively to the present day, with Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott as the only remaining original early members.
